The Alpaca House
The Hautes Fagnes plateau in winter
The Fagnes

Belgium's highest plateau, and its quietest.

Four thousand five hundred hectares of peat bogs, heather, moors and crooked pines. Fog in the morning, red in autumn, white in winter, green the rest of the time.

Four moods

The plateau you meet depends on the week you arrive.

Winter

Snow, silence, low light. The Signal de Botrange at 694m is the highest point in Belgium.

Spring

Meltwater. Cotton-grass. Deer before the hikers arrive.

Summer

Long light until 22h. Wooden walkways through the bogs. Lunch on the terrace.

Autumn

Red heather, red leaves, red sky. The photographer's season.
